The Toronto Star Year-long internship.

The Star Photo Department traditionally hires a year-long intern as part of the Youth Employment Program, so some rules apply.

The successful candidate will be able to hit the ground running, both learning from and contributing to a 18-photographer staff.

The Intern will have the opportunity to shoot a wide range of subjects including portraits, features, general news, spot news and sports.

The intern will work a rotating shift (four-day work week) with the full responsibilities of a staff photographer. Past interns have also been given the opportunity to pursue both staff-generated and personal projects.

THE YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM

The Youth Employment Program is a joint project of the guild and management at The Star. The purpose is to provide jobs for people under the age of 30 who have NEVER held a permanent full-time job at a daily newspaper.

These are one-year contracts with a formal program of career and skills development and work experience. The program starts mid-September and the application deadline for the Fall 2007 program is Friday, July 27, 2007.

The 8 internship spots include writers, copy editors and a photographer. These are paid, full-time positions. We've had successful applicants who do not have journalism degrees, but who do have degrees in a special interest area and extensive journalism experience.

The program begins with two weeks of orientation and interns will participate in bi-monthly seminars.

Hello everyone, here are some pics from edmonton.

The following are of a man named Leonard, he has been on the streets for over 15 years, he has an addiction to crack (which is as easy as buying a pop here) he was living in the river valley in a tent, he is currently working on getting into treatment for his addiction, once a teacher and university student, Leonard is a smart, articulate well-mannered man. I just hope the treatment centre will let me hang with him while he try's to get clean.

Hope everyone's summer is going well.

Kelwood, Man.'s Elgin Beyette has one of his horses fall, during the
chuck wagon races at the 125th annual Killarney Agricultural Fair and
Exhibition in Killarney, Man. on Saturday June 23, 2007. The horse, a
14 tear old gelding named Alley Cat, recovered, finished the race, and
was uninjured. "It's the closest I've ever come to having a horse go
down," Beyette said after the race. "He was laying flat out on it and
his legs were all out and it pulled the lines out of my hand", said
Beyette, still stunned by the near accident.

I have been in a assingment slump for a little while, howevere I think I nailed one this morning. I was given this assignment earlier this week to set-up and was pretty excited when I got it and I was not going to give it up. Osvaldo Jeanty is one of the best basketball players in Canada right now and one of the nicest people I have met. I shot him and his family over two days on my time off with no over-time and worked a 14 hour day in the process. That is how bad I wanted this job and it paid off. It just goes to show that even though you are doing well for yourself that sacrificing your own time to make the picture you want to make pays off. I borrowed a friends set of Alien Bees, they are amazing! One softbox upfront and two lights with beauty dishes wide to the side and behind. 200 ISO, 1/500th, f 8, 1/2 power.

Instructors from Assiniboine Community College toured Algonquin Power's wind farm in St. Leon, Man. on Friday March 30, 2007. The college has plans to start a new program it hopes will expand with the province's wind energy industry. Vestas, the world's leading wind turbine manufacturer, is backing the college's bid to launch the program which will be one of five in the nation and the only one in the province.

Registered piano technician Mark Cramer installs and settles new strings on a 1959 Baldwin concert grand piano at St. Matthew's Cathedral in Brandon on Friday Feb. 16, 2007. Cramer has been working on the piano for the past nine years, first owned by Brandon University and now St. Matthew’s. To prepare it for its new home, Cramer did more painstaking repairs to produce the desired resonance and warmth from the piano, including removing and re-installing the sound board, hand-building the hammers, removing and reinstalling the strings, and working with a welder to harden the metal plates that keep the strings in place.. "It's an exciting thing for the church", exclaimed Cramer who has been working seven day weeks to ready the piano in time.

It was around 6am, so not much light, but the light that was there was real nice. I was sent to Ryerson University to photograph a short movie being made called "Makeout" The movie was being filmed in an auditorium where lots of people were making out. over 100 people. There were rehearsals before the filming were people practiced kissing. Once the rehearsals were over everyone filed into the auditorium and started to make out.

I don't think Pike is flying in, so no one should need a pull-out couch

Shane Bernier, a cancer patient who has asked people to send him birthday cards. This was shot on his home on the first day he really started getting the cards, 1600 on that day.

David Suzuki speaking in Cornwall. Not only an interesting speaker, but good for expressions and movement. I like this one because it looks like he's the emperor about to shoot lightning bolts out of his hands.

I headed to the local ski hill and set up some lights for another picture package. It just ran this week and I've been getting lots of great feedback from the community and co-workers on this one.

I thought I would share a few more pictures from the last few months.

I was trying to get some geese, the bridge, and the sunset all in one picture. The geese kept running away but this frame actually worked. It ended up running with a story in January about the animals migrating late in the season.

I shot this picture as part of a package I did about a stained glass studio. Say what you want about the fisheye lens but I love that thing!

I shot this for a story we did about internet bullying. Would this be considered a photo illustration even if there is no real post processing?

It's been a big change going to community news, but both papers publish twice a week so it keeps me busy as their only photographer, and I love living back in Vancouver. I know its been a while...I'm living in Edmonton and have found myself working with the Homeless once again. It's a blast, they amaze me with thier outlook on society and how they fit within or out of it. I hope to be in Vancouver for the summer so I can continue on with their story there.

Ethics question

I shot this picture on Thursday.

We did a story about the woman earlier in the week. She is going on a hunger strike to protest the way she is being treated by some sort of disability agency.

This picture is about her 16 year-old-son who is putting together a petition to support his mother.

My question is a simple matter of 'manipulation'. I used 'traditional' darkroom techniques to get rid of a reflection that I did not notice until I was back at the office. All I did was burn out the hilights and midtones, but in effect it erased the reflection.

Is this ethical or does it overstep boundaries? Would you do it? Does it even really make a difference in the final image?

Let me know what you think, or how your paper would deal with it...

They are a brutally heavy rock/metal/whatever band from Kingston. The drummer of the band is a good friend of mine, Mark McGee who is a PJ grad from Loyalist. I know some you reading this blog will know him. Anyway... I like taking photos at shows, though its hard to shoot when you're really enjoying the tunes!

Polaroids from Film Fest

This is what i wrote for the paper.

I'm a big movie buff. I love movies.
So when my editors assigned me to photograph the Toronto
International Film Festival, I couldn't have been happier.
My job was to photograph celebrities at Yorkville hotels.
Only one problem: Hotel rooms.
Not exactly the best locations to work with. They all look the
same, dimly lit dungeons with bad wallpaper and nothing
expressing any kind of individuality.
In the minutes or sometimes seconds that publicists allow, it is
often difficult to make photographs that are more than pretty
pictures of celebrities.
So about a month before the festival I started thinking of how I
could bring something a little different to the coverage in the
paper.
After mulling it over I decided to do Polaroid photographs. I
wanted to bring back something old and simple in the age of
highly digital and complicated cameras.
I wanted the photos I took to express the personality of the
people I was photographing. Polaroids did exactly that.
The idea was simple. Take a Polaroid, hand it over and say,
"Could you please write something on this?"
I wanted the photos to be simple too. Out of focus, poorly
exposed, nothing mattered. The main thing was for the celebrities
to have a hand in making the photos their own.
Slowly, it caught on, and eventually it flew out of my hands.
When I walked in to photograph Tim Robbins he informed me that he
didn't like long photo shoots and that I would have a minute
to a minute and a half. After a generous two minutes
photographing Robbins, I showed him the Polaroids and told him of
the idea. He agreed and spent the next five or six minutes
creating his Polaroid.
These photographs might lack the shine and lustre of normal
celebrity photographs, but I feel they say more about the people
in them than anything else I could have done in a five-minute
hotel-room shoot.

Since the end of September I have been working as a two-way reporter for The Equity, a weekly out of Shawville, Quebec (just about an hour west of Ottawa on the Quebec side). Things are going pretty good. Writing and shooting makes it hard to do both well, but it pays the bills.

Long time no post.
I just got back home to Canada after two weeks stay in America. I had an amazing, awesome and magnificent time ever since I started photography. I've never met so many talented, passionate people in one sitting before. I can’t describe my experience. It is beyond description.

OJ in O-Town

I was in Ottawa recently walking around the city looking for a good breakfast. i called Fraser and asked if she wanted to go for breakfast. we decided on the Elgin Street Dinner. On the menu they had the reugalar fare, but what i found interesting was the different sizes of OJ you can get. i LOVE OJ. "32 oz. please" when ordering it seemed like a good idea. i didn't realize how much juice that actually was. When it came to the table I was blown away by its size. I looked at the massive sized juice and decided to try and finish it. That was my first mistake. the second mistake was ordering a big breakfast which consisted of 3 Eggs, Ham, sausage, bacon, home fries and baked beans with 3 slices of toast! Woah! needless to say i couldnt finish the OJ and I couldnt finish the breakfast and later that evening i lost a chicken ball eating competion. but thats another story! here are some pics. the photo of the dude taking a photo is one i like from ottawa.

Breaking the monotony

Hey guys,

Seeing as how no one has posted anything on here for over a week, just thought I would throw out some pics I've taken over the last few weeks. The first is a picture of the treeclimb event from a lumberjack competition at the International Plouging Match. Brad Doerr on the right comes down the tree first as Mack Lloyd starts his descent. Second picture, just a street scene outside of BCE Place in Toronto. Third picture is of a family walking down by the lakeshore in Oakville, while I was on a boat heading out to take some yachting pictures.

Grinding in Guelph

It's been some time, but my feet are somewhat on the ground so I thought I would put up some pics. It's been a weird transition from shooting ocean air to farm fields, beautiful people to Ontario people, and Canon to Nikon - joking about the people thing, Guelphites are actually quite good looking.
Guelph is a great town with lots of microbrews, so that keeps a guy happy. The newsroom is excellent with about five or six young-ish reporters, so it's a very ambitious place to be - pretty much the opposite to what I was working with out East.
All-in-all, things are good. Definitely looking to hit the Big Smoke for some drinks soon - And - hey, Guelph isn't far for you Toronto folk either. Just to throw it out there - my cell is 519.803.1590.
Well - here are some recent pics.

We've got the provincial Furrow Queen (basically a beauty queen but she has to be able to drive a tractor); then we have a couple of pics of a farmer needing to lease his land out to a gravel company to make ends meet because the soil isn't farmable anymore - the whole town is up in arms, spraypainting his farm, putting up petitions, etc; then an artist whose work has been banned because it's too "dark", then the Prez. of the Muslim society at the Univeristy for a story of "Islamophobia", and last but not least - a pic that I shot from the hip with a point-and-shoot of my Dad in Fenway for the first time. My bro and I took my Dad a.k.a - I love the Blue Jays more than my sons - to see the Jays/Red Sox series in Boston before I came up here.

By the way - sorry for the long-winded type and too many pics, but I felt like putting them on.
