Hello, welcome to the blog!
I loved the soundslide presentation. Some very moving stuff! I think this is were young photogs need to be headed. if you can bring back something like this presentation from an event to your editors they would be so pleased!!!!
Great work!

Brett,

Awesome slide show. Sometimes I find the audio photo combo to be gimmicky but not here. I love the snippits of real sound you've gathered from the street. The sound is just as powerful, if not more so, as the photos and it makes for a great combination. I've been thinking of collecting sound while shooting and you've sold me on it. What do you use for recording...mini disc, digital?

Hey guys, thanks for the kind words. I'll be working on some more through the summer at the Herald when I get the chance....
The combo for recording the audio was a Belkin Ipod voice recorder with a lapel mic. The recorder was $40 and the mic was $20. It also has a speaker, so I you can use it a kick-ass alarm clock and set it to your favourite playlist on your ipod.
I used audacity to mix the audio and put it all together.

Nice work man. Crazy that this skid row exists... maybe the Globe would buy it? people should see it.

That clip of the guy getting ripped off was really powerful... but you left me hanging by not showing of photo of it. did you get a photo?

Perhaps audio is "easier" to grab than the photos? I never thought of it until now - what do you think?

Hey Marc...
Never my intension to leave anyone hanging. I shot about 1/2 to 3/4 of this with a Leica 35mm on Tri-X film, and when it came to all the intense stuff with people smoking crack and fighting over it...Well I didn't load the film right and lost the whole roll. Shows me for not shooting hardly any film all year, I lost the roll with all the best stuff. Angriest person alive at that point in time, I can guarantee.
As for audio being easier to grab, yeah it is way easier. You just have to stand there. There is no composition or exposure. As for the globe or anyone else buying it, I don't know, It's a fairly well documented issue although I guess not too many people outside of Vancouver know about it?

Thanks for the info.

Shitty luck about the loading problem.

I'm sure you're now well seasoned. Reversed-education is powerful, but stings like hell.

Keep it up.
