CanWest is also pulling out of Canadian Press. They are expected to give their years notice any day now. They are really tightening the strings.

Yeah, that's been the talk (or threat) for a while now.

So, can we expect a new CanWest wire service?

The only problem with that is the difference between a CanWest staffer and a CP staffer. Apples and oranges for the most part.

my thoughts on this is that Canwest needs some photogs dedicated to their wire instead of them jsut using pictures from their member papers, somehting like 2 in ottawa, 2 in toronto, 1 in atlantic and 1 in the west, at least in order for that plan to fly.

CanWest has a wire service that was supposed to be feeding the National Post. I think am pretty sure they are going to put a huge chain-wide mandate that nearly all images that go through their local server go across teh wire as well. They may even be working on a system that makes each papers working archive transparent so that each paper can see what is going on in real time. I think they are working on something like this for the Sun chain as well.
CanWest will still have CP for a year after they cancel, you have to give a notice. It costs the chain millions of dollars every year per paper for photos and stories. I think the only part of the part of the Country that CP has a staffer over CanWest is on the East coast.

Blair. To let you know we do have access to all other canwest merlins already. Right now I could go into Windsor's and look at all the pics you shot on your internship. So there is a huge archive between all the papers. As for when the time comes to drop CP, I think it will be officially announced next week and will take place in one year... Shit is going to hit the fan. We use alot of CP pics but even more CP files in stories. As far as I am aware there will not be a hire. So, I think Freelancers are going to be working more, and staffers are going to have to take on more assignments.

There's my 2 cents.

As for the Dose thing...I can't say I'm going to miss it. As far as I'm concerned, it only seemed to exist as a space to direct advertising to young people.

I second that Scott, I had never personally looked at one before, then the other day after learning about it, I took a look and it was seriously, a huge piece of shit, it makes 24 hrs look like a reputable paper.
